I'm disturbed by how vehemently the Rs oppose this bill, when you look at it:<BR/><BR/>30% is tax cuts - so they must be at least 30% for it! (of course, they're not really for tax cuts unless they go to those who really need it - investors paying 15% on their capital gains)<BR/><BR/>10% lies in the above mentioned energy package, none of which is overtly offensive even to the most rabid conservative. Almost all of it will have a return on investment, and those most-beloved of souls, small business owners, will benefit from almost all of that spending. Then again, if big, bloated government would get out of the way, private money is just lined up, begging to invest right now, right? <BR/><BR/>So, lets assume for the sake of argument that the remaining 60% really is "bad, wasteful spending." Geez, worst case scenario: if we're going to pay people to be unemployed, we might as well pay them to work! Even digging holes and filling them back up is exercise!<BR/><BR/>Of course, the more likely scenario: the remainder isn't all bad and wasteful. Paying states to pay teachers to teach, rather than giving them unemployment benefits is not wasteful - it's sensible. Paying for fire stations, trails, wastewater treatment, policing, environmental cleanup, food stamps, the census, community colleges, libraries, volunteer programs, national forest health, computerized health records?!?! REALLY? This is what the republicans are complaining about after the 8 years we just went through?!! UN-FRICKING-BELIEVABLE! They have absolutely no soul, and it just goes to show why they lost. They deserve to have this held over their head 2 and 4 years from now. <BR/><BR/>The final glaring omission of reality by the Rs is that the appropriation process will probably reflect reduced revenues as well as these prior appropriations, and reduce spending somewhat accordingly, making this package not so much as it now seems. Great work by the Dems.<BR/><BR/>GREAT work Jesse, sorry to hijack this comment, but I've been holding that one back for a week now while I study for the bar. (Idea - somebody should do a Christian Bale style rant about republicans and then mix it to some dance music - instant wonk web hit) Whew, now I can focus.
